Set up Shopify Live Chat

The Shopify integration in Kustomer offers a streamlined setup option to install a live chat widget in your Shopify store. This helps you get up and running quickly with sending and receiving messages through Kustomer, without having to manually integrate the Kustomer Chat SDK into your Shopify themes.

Prerequisites

Before starting this integration, you must:

  • Have the chat channel set up in Kustomer, including its design. Learn how to set this up in this article.
  • Have at least one store already set up in Shopify and add the store to Kustomer.
  • Know your Shopify plan and theme version. Not all features are available on all themes or plans.

Set up the Live Chat widget (Online Store 2.0 only)

Once the Shopify app is installed and you have added a store, you can go to the Shopify app settings in Kustomer to set up the live chat integration.

  1. Go to Apps and select Shopify.
  2. In the desired store, locate the Live chat widget row and select Install.

    Note: If Install is not available, Kustomer's permissions in Shopify need to be updated first. Open the Store options and select Refresh permissions. After signing in to Shopify to grant permissions, try installing again.

  3. A window opens. If you have multiple brands set up in your organization, select the brand you wish to use with this store. You can set up different chat templates for each brand in the Chat settings. Learn more in Multi-brand chat.
  4. Follow the steps in the window to complete the install:
    1. First, turn on Kustomer chat in your Shopify theme editor and select Save.
    2. Optionally, go to the Shopify configuration page and add live chat to the Checkout and/or Thank you page.

      Note: Support for Checkout and Thank you pages is currently in beta.

  5. When you're ready for the widget to go live, select Install in the window.

The live widget is now installed. You can confirm the status of your installation by looking for the Live badge in the Shopify app settings in Kustomer.

Set up the Live Chat widget (Vintage theme)

If you are using a Vintage (1.0) theme , go to Apps, select Shopifyand install the legacy app using the link provided. The chat widget will be published instantly on your Shopify store. 

Upgrade your current Live Chat implementation (Online Store 2.0 only)

If you already have Kustomer chat set up in your Shopify store and you want to add Live Chat to your checkout and/or thank you pages, follow these steps:

  1. In Kustomer, go to Apps  > Shopify and select Upgrade for the store.

    Note: If you are on a Vintage theme and upgraded by mistake, uninstall the chat widget and follow the steps to set up the widget for a Vintage theme.

  2. Follow step 2 in the window that appears and go to the Shopify configuration page to add live chat to the Checkout and/or Thank you page.
  3. Select Install in the window.

Verify that Live Chat is installed

After installing Live Chat, check your Shopify store to confirm the installation was successful. The chat widget should appear in your store.

The widget will also appear in your checkout and/or thank you pages if you added them there.

Uninstall the widget

If you ever need to remove the chat widget from Shopify fully, you can do this from the Shopify app settings in Kustomer.

  1. Go to Apps and select Shopify.
  2. Locate and select Edit under the desired store.
  3. A popup will appear. If you only want to temporarily turn off the widget, use the Update Chat settings link to open the Chat settings, where you use the Turn on chat toggle to activate or deactivate chat.
  4. To fully deactivate the chat widget and remove it from your Shopify store, select Uninstall Chat.

The chat widget will be instantly uninstalled from Shopify. Return to the Shopify app settings in Kustomer anytime to turn it back on.
