You can connect your Shopify storefront to an AI Agent using the Shopify Search Orders tool. This allows the AI Agent to search Shopify directly and return real-time order details in response to the customer's inquiry.

In this article, you’ll learn how to set up the Shopify Search Orders tool and get details on what fields are available to use in the search.

### Prerequisites

Before using this tool, you must [install the Shopify app](https://help.kustomer.com/shopify-integration-rkei5NSL) in Kustomer and set up your store(s).

We also recommend having an understanding of [using tools in AI Agents](https://help.kustomer.com/understand-ai-agent-tools-ByB09BdAA).

### Set up the tool

AI Agents use this tool to look up order information directly from Shopify. It can be used by both customer-facing agents ([AI Agents for Customers](https://help.kustomer.com/understand-ai-agents-SJWtPjAtC)) and internal agents using [Copilot](https://help.kustomer.com/en_us/use-copilot-SyU13vB1lg). The tool only reads from Shopify; it does not read from or write to Kustomer.

1. From the left navigation panel, click the ****Kustomer AI**** icon.

2. Click ****Tools**** to open the ****Manage Tools**** page.

3. Click **Add a Tool**.

4. Select **Shopify - Search orders** and from the **Store Name** drop-down menu, pick the store you want to connect.

5. **Enter a name for the tool.**
The tool’s name helps you identify it later and helps the AI Agent in understanding its function. By default, the tool is named “Get Shopify orders by order number.”

**Note:** We recommend choosing a name that clearly reflects the store or use case so that you can easily identify the tool when creating an AI Agent. For example, “Shopify – US Store Order Lookup”. You can only use that name once. If you leave the default name and later try to create another tool with the same name, you won’t be able to.

6. **Optionally, edit the description.**
This helps the AI know when to use the tool.

7. **Choose your search fields.**
By default, the Order name/number is set. You can remove or replace this with a different field.

**Note:** The AI Agent will **_always_** search by the customer's email address in addition to any other field you configure. If the customer does not have an email address on file in Kustomer, the tool will not return any orders.

8. **Select output fields.**
Choose what information the tool should return from Shopify when a match is found. The AI Agent can use the fields you select to help formulate a response or show directly to the end user. This [table shows a list](#available-output) of what is returned by default and what additional fields are available for you to add.

9. **Create a search query for each search field.**
The tool won’t work unless each search field has a corresponding query.

10. **(Optional) Set the number of results to return**
If more than one order matches the criteria, the tool will return all matching orders. To limit this, you can use the **Response Size** field to restrict the number of results returned.

### Available search fields

Use the fields below to define what the AI Agent should look for when searching Shopify orders. For each field, the agent will take customer input and submit it directly as the search value, along with the customer's email, which is always included.

For example, if Order Number is the only search field and a customer enters "large brown bag", the agent will treat “brown, large, bag” as the order number and try to search for that.

### FAQ

**Q. Can I use the same tool for multiple stores?**

No, each tool can only be used for one store.

**Q: If I change or delete a field in Shopify that’s being used in a tool, will it automatically update in Kustomer?**

No. The tool does not sync with changes made in Shopify. If you delete or modify a field in your Shopify setup, the tool will stop working as expected. You’ll need to manually update the tool configuration in Kustomer to reflect those changes.
